Telangana: Pharma firms dump waste in outskirts

The Telangana Pollution Control Board has recorded four cases in the last 45 days of illegal dumping of toxic waste.

HYDERABAD: For lawless pharmaceutical companies, city outskirts are a convenient dumping ground. The Telangana Pollution Control Board has recorded four cases in the last 45 days of illegal dumping of toxic waste. Pharma companies choose deserted locations beyond the Outer Ring Road to dump the waste.

The latest targets now are areas towards north of Hyderabad in villages of Moodchintalpally and Pudur near Jeedimetla and Bollarum industrial areas. PCB teams in the last week of September found 33 cans of toxic residue at Moodchintalpally and 40 in Pudur. “These cans were just left there until locals intimated us about them. The cans have been sent to the treatment plant at Jeedimetla,” said Mr B. Veeranna, senior scientist with the PCB.

Investigation is on to find out which companies had dumped the waste. The board is clueless as to how the menace can be resolved. “We can anal-yse the waste. Finding the culprit is difficult as the cans bear no company names,” said Mr Kumar Pathak, PCB environment engineer. The PCB has lodged complaints with the police against unidentified persons.
