Supreme Court to study if poll-time freebies are for welfare
The HP government distributed freebies and claimed that it will come under the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to examine whether distribution of freebies like washing machines, etc., on the eve of polls will come under the ambit of state’s welfare measure scheme.
A bench headed by Justice R.K. Agrawal issued notice to the EC and Himachal Pradesh government on a special leave petition filed by activist Kuldeep and others against a HP High Court order holding that such distribution will come under welfare.
The HP government distributed freebies and claimed that it will come under the Building and Other Construction Workers Act, 1996 and justified its action.
