Bengaluru: After deluge, brace for a chill

Rain likely to continue till Oct. 20 under Southwest monsoon. Winter could be five degrees colder.

Bengaluru: It is official. The Southwest Monsoon, which was to end on September 30, will continue till October 20. For Bengalureans, this would mean a prolonged drive through potholed roads and extended flooding of homes and roads.

Mr Srinivas Reddy, Director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), said, “A delayed Southwest Monsoon entered the state in June. After its initial lull, it gathered steam in August and has been bringing widespread rains across North-interior and South-interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru.”

As there was a delay in its entry by 15-20 days and looking at the system prevailing over Bay of Bengal, the Southwest Monsoon will take another 15 days to end. Though there is an extension of Southwest Monsoon, rains recorded from October 1 will be calculated under the Northeast Monsoon, he said. “The city will receive rains till October 20. For one or two days, rains will be very heavy, then there will be a pause and then the city may witness heavy rains again. This will extend up to October 20, going by the prevailing weather conditions.”
