Kakinada: GGH sanitation workers continue strike on 4th day
Kakinada: Contract workers of sanitation wing in Government General Hospital (GGH) continued their strike on fourth day demanding their payment of pending four months' salary.
With the workers attending only emergency services, the sanitary condition in GGH is getting worse by the day and the stench in general wards of the hospital is unbearable. Garbage got piled up in many places.
Centre of Indian Trade Union city secretary Ch. Ajay Kumar said that the contractor received Rs 1.5 crores from the government and had not paid salaries to the sanitation staff for the past four months. “GGH officials's were lenient towards the contractor and on the other hand, they are pressuring sanitation workers to attend duties,” he said.
Union leaders Ch. Ajay Kumar, P. Veerababu, Mediseety Venkata Ramana and others held discussions with the GGH Superintendent M. Raghavendra Rao. The leaders said that salaries should be paid through hospital development society funds. Dr Raghavendra Rao said that the issue would be solved soon.
Meanwhile, Kakinada MLA Vanamadi Venkateswara Rao (Kondababu) said that he would visit GGH on Friday to sort out the salary problem so that the contract workers will get back to work.
