Women protest illegal liquor sale in Kanchi
Chennai: Protesting liquor sale and alleging inaction by police, women of Keelpattu village in Seiyar in Kanchipuram district here took to the streets on Wednesday morning.
The women alleged that despite repeated appeals to Seiyar police to take measures to shut liquor outlets and check the illegal sale of alcohol in the area, there was no action. The protestors said that Jaiveeran (47) of the village sells cheap alcohol illegally and they have lodged a complaint with Seiyar police a few days ago, but no action was taken.
Villagers nabbed Jaiveeran and handed him over at the police station on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday evening, Jaiveeran's sons Kumar (26), Damodharan (24) and Munuswamy (20) barged into the houses of the villagers and attacked them. Four villagers sustained injuries and were rushed to the Chengalpattu government hospital for treatment.
After lodging a complaint to arrest the three men who attacked the villagers, police failed once again to arrest the illegal vendors. Following this, villagers staged a protest. Raising slogans against the illegal trade of liquor, hundreds of women held a road roko on the Seiyur-Madurantakam road and blocked a government bus. They alleged that their male members came home drunk and fought with them. Youths and even educated people of the village were gradually getting habituated to drink liquor.
Police reached on the spot and tried to pacify the women but failed. The road blockade continued till 1.30 pm. Bus services on the route were disrupted.
