Hyderabad: Police imposter cheats many job aspirants, held

Tanveer used to collect between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh by promising jobs to people.

Hyderabad: A 43-year-old man from the city who impersonated a police officer and a journalist and cheated many people by offering them jobs in exchange for money was apprehended by the Hyderabad Task Force on Wednesday.

Accused Syed Tanveer Hussain Rizvi (43) was using a mobile application that generated sounds similar to what is heard through over police walkie-talkie to make the people around believe him as a police officer, Task Force Additional DCP S. Chaitanya Kumar said.

Mr Kumar said Tanveer’s wife and children also thought that he was a policeman.

According to Task Force police, Tanveer, a Hussaini Alam resident, is a school dropout and has five children. He worked as a security officer at private companies and simultaneously as a driver but could not provide for his family.

He then took to cheating, Mr Kumar said. Tanveer allegedly managed to get identification cards that resembled those of policemen and impersonated an assistant sub-inspector with the Task Force and Central Crime Station and sometimes a police constable with the Central Zone Deputy Commissioner’s Office.

Tanveer also purchased a toy and wore a ‘safari dress’ to make people believe that he was a policeman. Apart from this, Tanveer downloaded the ‘Police Radio’ application on his smartphone that simulated sounds that are heard over a genuine police radio system and the siren of police vehicles.

Mr Kumar said Tanveer used to collect between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3 lakh by promising jobs to people. He also collected money by promising to get people vehicles at low rates at police auctions.

Sometimes, he posed as a journalist working with an Urdu newspaper and at other times as president of the International Human Rights Association, Mr Kumar said. He said five cases had been registered against Tanveer at Hyderabad and Cyber-abad. He was apprehended and handed over to the Hussain Alam police along with fake I-D cards, Rs 85,000 cash, a walkie-talkie and mobile phone.
