Expo on coins of ruler Krishnadevaraya big draw

Vijayawada: The mighty Vijayanagara emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya was fondly remembered for his outstanding contribution to art and literature at the 510th Sri Krishnadevaraya Coronation Day celebrations held by the Cultural Centre of Vijayawada & Amaravati (CCVA).

District collector A. Md. Imtiyaz, while inaugurating the special exhibition of coins used in the Vijayanagara empire, here on Wednesday, said that Sri Krishnadevaraya is regarded as an icon by many Indians and a source of inspiration to the present day generation in all walks of life. "Krishnadevaraya's aesthetic sense is reflected in the wide variety of coins issued by him," he said. Mr Imtiyaz felicitated the numismatist J.V.S.V. Prasad, a retired DGM, BSNL and the co-organiser of the coin exhibition.

CCVA CEO Dr E. Sivanagi Reddy said that they have displayed a total of 229 copper coins, including 6 coins of Harihara-I, one coin of Bukkaraya-I, 16 coins of Devaraya-I, 13 coins of Ramachandradeva, 2 coins of Devaraya-2, 6 coins of Mallikarjunaraya, 129 coins of Srikrishnadevaraya, 8 coins of Achyutaraya, 16 coins of Sadasivaraya, 6 coins of Tirumalaraya, 3 coins of Srirangaraya-I, 8 coins of Venkatapatiraya-II, 3 coins of Srirangaraya-II, one coin of Ramadevaraya and 10 coins of Venkatapatiraya-III.

Dr. Reddy said that along with the coins, laminated photos of the images of Sri Krishnadevaraya, temples built by him were also put on display as additional attractions for the benefit of the visitors. Students from SRR and CVR Government Degree College, Aravinda High School, Sikhara School visited the expo.
