Hyderabad: Around 17,450 engineering seats have been lying vacant but 5,000 students who got admissions have not yet reported to the colleges. As many as 8,380 MBA and MCA seats are also lying vacant.
Experts said that there are nearly 2,800 Pharmacy faculty for B.Pharm, M.Pharm and Pharm D, in 110 colleges but only 480 (5 per cent) seats have been filled in pharmacy.
Dr Suresh Babu, an education expert said: “In this academic year 2018-2019, only five per cent admissions took place in State pharmacy colleges. According to the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), there should be 15:1 student-teacher ratio in pharmacy colleges but the colleges are following 40:1. There are chances of termination of few teachers in pharmacy colleges as there are no admissions here.’’
“It is important to check the requirement of the Pharmacy Colleges before starting one because there are more Pharmacy Colleges in the state when compared to the strength of the students. Earlier, Pharmacy Colleges had more demand but now, like MCI, the demand for pharmacy courses have come down. So this should be kept in mind while giving permission to new pharmacy colleges,” he said.
