Chennai: BJP Yuva Morcha national president Poonam Mahajan called on Superstar Rajinikanth at his Poes Garden residence here, triggering speculation in political circles.
It was later clarified that her meeting with the veteran actor and his wife was “not political.” Daughter of Pramod Mahajan, a former Union minister killed in 2006, Poonam is a Lok Sabha MP representing Mumbai North Central constituency. “One of the most humble couples I have ever met... Lathaji and Thalaiva @superstarrajini ji,” the 36-year-old Poonam tweeted on Sunday while sharing several pictures of her visit on her official Twitter account.
The meeting of Poonam, who is on a visit to the city to participate in the BJP Yuva Morcha's march to Fort St George on Monday to highlight several issues including demanding improvement of education in government-run schools, with the veteran actor assumed significance as it took place amid the backdrop of Rajinikanth hinting about his political ambition.
There has been much speculation in the political circles on whether the 67-year-old star will join or launch his own party, especially after the Kabali star asked his fans to be “ready for war,” and added that the “system is rotten” and needs to be changed.
Whenever they visited Tamil Nadu , BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it a point to meet the Superstar and the latest is Poonam Mahajan. The party's national president Amit Shah had welcomed Rajini into the party. Apart from Rajini, speculation is also rife over another Tamil actor Kamal Haasan taking a plunge into politics.
Poonam later said the meeting was non-political. “I met Rajinikanthji because we knew each other for a long time. My entire BJP team met him and it is always a pleasure meeting him. The meeting is personal,” she said. “I appreciate his work and I support him. He is in Tamil Nadu people's heart. That is the bigger place than anything else. He is the leader of people. I respect that,” she told media. Her father was also a good friend of the actor, she added.
