Padala Chandraiah ill, can't go to Delhi fete

The Centre is felicitating freedom fighters on August 9 in Delhi, to mark 75 years of the Quit India Movement.

Hyderabad: Freedom fighter Padala Chandraiah said he would not go to Delhi to be felicitated and receive a citation from President Pranab Mukherjee due to his ill health.

Speaking to mediapersons at his residence in Mulkanoor of Bheemadevarapalli mandal of Karimnagar district on Sunday, Mr Chandaraiah, who took part in the Quit India Movement against the British, said he had informed officials that he would unable to make it. He had been jailed for a month. The Centre is felicitating freedom fighters on August 9 in Delhi, to mark 75 years of the Quit India Movement.

Chandraiah, a regular reader of Deccan Chronicle, has pledged his mortal remains to the Kakatiya Medical College. His wife’s body was handed over to the medical college in 2009. Locals described him as an honest man. They said that when his son needed his recommendation to get a job as a sub-inspector, Mr Chandraiah refused to oblige.
