Cables strangle K’mangala footpaths

The bus stop near Devi Eye Hospital has no street light nearby and footpath has some slabs missing.

Bengaluru: TenderSure roads were intended to be pedestrian friendly, but dangling wires and cables tied around trees at Koramnagala Block 5 presents a dirty picture. At most places the wide footpath has been encroached with two-wheelers parked on them, forcing pedestrians to walk on the roads.

“The dangling wires and cables around trees, some even on the footpath are not just eyesores, but there have been occasions when pedestrians tripped over them. Koramangala Block 5 witnesses heavy traffic throughout the day and hence pedestrian safety in this area is of prime importance. Numerous shops have come up in the area, but there is no designated space for parking. During peak hours some even ride their bikes on the footpath,” said Mahentesh, a daily commuter.

While moving towards Block 6 the situation worsens. With no street lights and garbage strewn over the walkways and at bus stops there is little breathing space provided to the pedestrians.

The bus stop near Devi Eye Hospital has no street light nearby and footpath has some slabs missing. There have been instances of passengers walking towards the stop falling into the ditch.

Despite the direction issued by the city Mayor to replace incandescent bulbs with LED lights, these areas still await replacement.

“The slabs of the drains have caved in. The Corporator says white-topping will be initiated soon. The 80ft road needs an overhaul. We have been demanding this for the past four years. The drains are clogged and there is virtually no footpath. The area near Passport office is in a mess,” said Deepankar, a local resident. Filling of potholes have proved futile, as they hardly last more than few months.

“Why should not the filling come off? The dumping of gravel and construction debris is not the solution. They are not even compacted. Due to such shortcut tactics there are bumps across the street. How will the motorists move?” Deepankar questioned.

The Mayor and the local corporator did not respond to several calls made to them.
