Government projects emission to manage clearances

2.5 lakh vehicles produce 107.92 tonnes of CO2 daily.

Hyderabad: After beginning work on flyovers, underpasses and grade separators under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is gearing up to start work on the controversial stretch in front of KBR Park in Jubilee Hills.

The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has directed the GHMC to stop work on the project until the ministry of environment, forest and climate change fixes the eco-sensitive zone of the park.

GHMC officials are clueless about the progress of the issue which has been pending for a year. An official said the government, in order to keep the project on track, had decided to hold a meeting with the forest department and appoint a special officer to pursue the issue with Centre and get the clearance at the earliest.

A recent survey conducted by the GHMC showed that about 2.5 lakh vehicles use the road between KBR Park junction and Jubilee Hills check post every day, and produce 107.92 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 0.05 tonnes of methane and 0.02 tonnes metric acid. The report said that if the situation was allowed to continue, the alarming increase in vehicles would result in emission of 456.19 tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2035, which would make it impossible for people to live in the city.

In view of this, the government has asked the civic body to chalk out an action plan to construct six multi-level flyovers at the KBR Park junction.

It has directed the civic body to conduct a social impact assessment and acquire land outside the eco-sensitive zone of the KBR Park. A senior GHMC official said the corporation had completed soil tests to ascertain geo-technicalities. This is an important and mandatory exercise before laying the foundation for the flyovers. He said the corporation was ready with drawings and would make the required changes after the demarcation of the eco-sensitive zone by the Centre.
