IIT-Madras' app designing becomes largest online tech course

Students, IT professionals can register for eight-week online course until July 24.

CHENNAI: With over 83,000 students and professionals enrolled so far, the eight-week long mobile app design course offered by IIT Madras has become largest online tech course in the country. IIT Madras is offering an opportunity to all those basic programming skills to learn app development. The free online course called IMAD (Introduction to Modern Application Development) will start from July 24. Students and professionals can register at www.imad.tech. up to July 24.

“On an average around 2 per cent of the registered candidates will complete an online course. Of 83,000 candidates, more than 7 per cent of them have cleared the course so far which is way ahead compared to other courses,” said Gaurav Raina, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras. By enrolling into the course, one can learn to develop mobile applications.

 

“The students who took the course have developed 6,700 apps. Around 450 candidates have got the internships with the companies like Mastercard and Swiggy after completing the course,” he said. More than 20 companies are internship partners to the course. The course was started September and it will be conducted twice a year. In view of layoffs, this course can actually serve as hope for the IT professionals.

“The skills that IT professionals have are old technology skills. We are teaching modern technology skills. Because it’s modern technology no engineering institute actually teaches these skills,” Gaurav Raina said.The course has attracted 1,500 candidates from 20 foreign countries as well. Gaurav Raina and Tanmai Gopal, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder of Hasura, a core technology startups are conducting the course through NPTEL.

The IMAD tech website also has resources required to learn or to brush up required programming basics. The course will have five modules including the introduction to internet, common network protocols and building the basic web application and how to ensure security for an application. The course will have graded assignments and a final test to help one remain focused through the course. In addition, an examination (optional) will be conducted on completion of the course and on successfully clearing it students can obtain the certificate from IIT Madras.
