Karnataka: Fishermen go on strike for harbour

The protest was intended to press for the immediate launch of work on the all weather fishing harbour at Kulai.

Mangaluru: Fishermen abstained from venturing into the sea as a mark of protest in Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday. The protest was intended to press for the immediate launch of work on the all weather fishing harbour at Kulai along with various other demands. “The Central government has approved Rs 230 crore for a fishing harbour at Kulai which has been the demand of fishermen for several years.

Though the district administration has given green signal for CRZ and the pollution control clearance was obtained about four months ago, the file has not yet reached Delhi due to which the work is being delayed,” Meenugarara Horata Samithi convener Ramachandar Bykampady said.

“The file had to reach the Central government by the end of the financial year in April. But the government has extended the limit till July 18. If it does not reach by then, there are chances of the project being stopped,” he said. Fishermen say the harbour at Kulai would be of great help to all fishing boats in and around Mangaluru.
