Ooty: While the Government High School at Iduhatti village near here has been closed due to lack of student strength, surprisingly at the Panchayat Union primary school (PUPS) in the same village, students’ strength has gone up to a little over 100 this year from a single digit in 2016-17.

The change in fortunes owes to the school headmistress and villagers joining to revive the fortunes of this school.

R. K. Ravichandran, a villager in Idhuhatti, said that villagers held a meet last June  and decided

to admit their children in the PUPS as English medium education was introduced in the school.

Nearly 100 children joined this school this year.

Through the parent-teacher association, five teachers were appointed. Three of them take `5,000 as salary per month from donations from the villagers, he added.

Ms.S.Chitra, headmistress of the PUPS at Iduhatti, spends Rs 10,000/-  per month from her savings to give salaries to two other teachers who joined the school through the parent-teacher association appointment.

“Now, this school is offering English medium and smart class facility from LKG level as the villagers and some service organizations like the Lion’s club  are helping for infrastructure development,”  she added.
