Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram commissionerates upgraded

Sanjay Kumar Gurudin, Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, S. Surendran and K. Sethuraman respectively are holding the post.

Thiruvananthapuram: IG level officers Vijay Sakhare and Dinendra Kashyap will be commissioners in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram respectively as part of the upgradation of the commissionerates here into metropolitian commissionerates. At present the commissioners of both these cities were held by DIG rank officers.

However, the government has not yet taken a decision on granting magisterial powers to the commissioners. This was necessary for the upgradation into metropolitan commissionerates.

The revenue department officials are against granting magisterial powers in districts as they are only conferred to collectors. Moreover, with magisterial powers, commissioners will also get the powers to detain a person under Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act. This powers are now wrested with the collectors.

Apart from that, heads of north and south zone will be headed by IG rank officers. This would be a demotion of the post as it was now being held by ADGPs.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Thrissur and Kannur ranges now headed by IGs will be headed by DIG rank officers.
