Wipro lake littered with garbage, plastic

There is a bund surrounding the lake, which enables the visitors to walk.

Hyderabad: The Nanakramguda lake in Financial District, popularly called Wipro lake after the IT major helped restore it, is in bad shape.

Twitter user Raman Kumar on Thursday put out pictures showing moss covering a part of the lake, and trash thrown by locals. “Many fish (are dying) in Wipro lake. People are throwing wine bottles, garbage, gutka packets, tea cups, and waste pooja material (sic),” he tweeted.

After the lake was restored by Wipro Limited, it had become a popular place. Employees as well as locals used to have lunch and relax there. As a result, the garbage also increased and there were no dustbins in the area. The trash found its way into the lake.

Mr M. Sathish, an employee at Wipro said, “There is a bund surrounding the lake, which enables the visitors to walk. As they walk on it, they throw whatever that is left with them into the waters, mostly plastic covers. This is increasing the pollution in the lake. Besides, locals come and dump puja samagri. We often find beer bottles,” he said.

On the eve of Mrigasira, which stresses on the importance of eating fish, a family had come to the lake for fishing. Mr K. Anil, a member of the family, said, “We came here for fishing, Earlier we used to get so many fish, but now it was difficult to catch any here. May be it is because of the pollution.”

Stretching his hand towards the main road, Mr Anil said, “In my childhood, the lake was till there. Now, only this much is left.”
