Rising Fuel costs: KSRTC may hike fares
Bengaluru: With the recent rise in fuel prices, KSRTC is contemplating to increase fares to cope with the additional financial burden. However, they are awaiting the new Transport Minister’s review. A senior KSRTC officer said, “When fuel prices were hiked, we assumed they would drop but now, our fuel expenditure has risen.” The increase has not been finalised but is being worked out so commuters aren’t badly hit.
"Without a Transport Minister to review and approve the the proposal nothing can be done,” he added.
Another officer mentioned that the price hike should come into effect immediately, which can help KSRTC avoid incurring losses.
“After the fuel price rose we have been spending around Rs 70 lakh a day. We get a discount of Rs 2, but this makes no impact. Spiraling fuel costs will affect KSRTC’s other expenditure.”
A senior BMTC official was asked about their fare hike. He said, “We are also thinking about it, but haven’t decided. Fuel prices have gone up, we need to increase the ticket price to a certain extent, but have to also ensure that the passengers are not badly affected. The decision regarding fares will be taken at the earliest.”
