Hyderabad: Residents of the twin cities are troubled by frequent interruptions in the power supply. Power is cut off at the first sight of rain, as a precautionary measure, even when the rain is not accompanied by strong winds. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours for the power to be restored.
Early on Tuesday morning, the residents of Venkataramna Colony in Khairatabad were without power for two hours. They said that they were unable to complain to the officials because all their phones were busy. The residents of Yapral said that the power went off at 2 am, and it was restored at 6 am. Abul Faisal, a resident of the old city, says that the government had promised to provide round-the-clock power supply during the Ramzan, but the opposite has been happening.
The occurrence of power cuts during periods of low demand is surprising. At present, the power demand in the state is only 132 MW. Energy officials maintain that there have been no power cuts either in the capital city or in the districts. Satish Kumar, the CGM of TS Transco, says that they are not imposing power cuts in the city and they have not received any complaints regarding power interruptions either.
He says that sometimes, during the rain, transmission lines touch each other due to the wind, which causes transformers to trip and the power supply to get cut off; power may also be interrupted if trees fall on the transmission lines.
