SHRC asks detailed report, docus on Kathirval encounter
Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission directed the principal secretary to Government, public (law & order) department, Tamil Nadu, to file a detailed report along with relevant documents in connection with the recent encounter death of Kathirval, 28, a history sheeter in Salem. The commission initiated the proceedings based on a fax message received from the superintendent of police, Salem regarding the encounter of Kathirvel and ordered a probe.
The commission registered a case in the SHRC and chairperson Justice T.Meenakumari, directed the principal secretary to government, public (law & order) department, Tamil Nadu, to file a detailed report along with relevant documents in six weeks. The commission also ordered the Director General of Police/Director, Investigation Division, SHRC, to investigate the matter and submit a report to the Registrar in eight weeks. Kathirvel, wanted in about eight cases including murder, fell dead to bullets fired by a police inspector in "self-defence" after he allegedly attacked two policemen, who surrounded him near Kullampatti when he tried to flee from their custody.
Kariyapatti police were on the lookout for Kathirvel in connection with the recent murder of Ganesh, a snacks trader. He was spotted drunk near Kullampatti. A special police team led by inspector Subramaniam and sub-inspector Mari rushed to the spot and surrounded him to nab him. Angered at being cornered by the police, Kathirvel reportedly threw some deadly weapons at the two policemen who suffered minor cut injuries. To defend himself, the inspector reportedly fired at Kathirvel who dropped dead on the spot.
