Put off polls by 2 weeks: Parties

If the CEO does not postponed the MLC elections, TPCC chief N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said his party would move the court on this issue.

Hyderabad: Opposition parties led by the Congress met the Telangana chief electoral officer Rajat Kumar on Tuesday demanded the postponement of MLC elections from local authorities constituencies for two weeks.

In a memorandum, the Opposition parties said “the MPTCs and ZPTCs are the voters for electing MLCs in local authorities constituencies. But since the elections were conducted to elect new MPTCs and ZPTCs this month, the election to MLCs should be postponed till the list of newly elected MPTCs and ZPTCs is submitted to the Election Commission.”

The members of Legislative Council are elected by different sections of the society. Of this, one-third members are elected by local authorities.

Opposition parties found fault with CEO issued the MLC election notification on May 7, a day after the first phase of local body polls were completed in the state. The results of local body elections will be out on May 27 and the elections for MLCs are scheduled three days thereafter on May 31.

They questioned how could the Election Commission allow old MPTCs and ZPTCs — who comprise the voters list for these MLCs — vote after their tenure had ended.0

The Telangana CEO, however, has clarified that although the results for the ZPTC and MPTC election will be annou-nced on May 27, the sitting MPTC and ZPTCs will be eligible to vote in the local body MLC election.
