Hyderabad: Rs 30 lakh worth foreign cash seized at RGIA

Hyderabad: An Indian man who attempted to smuggle foreign currency worth `30.35 lakh from Hyderabad to Dubai in a flight was apprehended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) on Monday night.

The currency, which the passenger was carrying in his hand baggage, was recovered by the CISF during screening and handed over to the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) for further investigation.

The CISF assistant sub-inspector Schinda Nand Varma, who was on baggage scanning duty at the time, identified a suspicious item in the handbag being carried by Thomas Benny (Passport no - Z2661214).

The ASI then referred the baggage to sub-inspector Satish Kumar Meena, who found currency notes of various countries in it. The currency was found to be worth around Rs 30.35 lakh.

“The passenger failed to produce the requisite documents for the foreign currency that he was carrying. The customs officials at the RGI Airport were informed about the incident, and the passenger and the cash were handed over to the AIU for further investigation,” said CISF officials on Tuesday.
