Govt failed to protect waterbodies, says K Balakrishnan
Nagapattinam: Tamil Nadu State CPI(M) secretary, K. Balakrishnan, on Tuesday, accused the government for failing to protect waterbodies in the state. Besides not only desilting local tanks, steps were not taken to even store rain water, and now, the state is facing an acute water crisis, he added.
Addressing the media here on the sidelines of an advisory meeting in protest against the Union Government's nod to extract hydrocarbon in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam he said that it was decided to undertake a two-wheeler rally from June 5 to June 10 across the delta region, demanding to government to declare the entire Cauvery delta as 'protected agriculture zone' and to cancel hydrocarbon and methane projects.
He said, the CPI(M) will never allow private corporates or the ONGC to extract hydrocarbon in the delta districts. But if they would stick to their stand, there will be a of relay agitations across the delta, he warned.
