Chennai: The state will continue to face heat wave for the next two days, said the Indian Meteorological Department.
Stating that heat wave conditions would prevail over some places in Tamil Nadu for the next two days, Met department officials on Tuesday advised people not to expose themselves to direct sunlight, especially between 11 am and 4 pm, to avoid the risk of sunstroke.
With the onset of 'Agni Nakshathram', temperatures have been soaring and crossed 100 degrees Fahrenheit for the last two days.
On Tuesday, Chennai recorded 105 degrees Fahrenheit, Vellore and Madurai recorded the highest temperatures at 111.2 degrees Fahrenheit followed by Namakkal and Tiruchy at 107.6 degrees Fahrenheit, Salem and Erode at 105.8 degrees Fahrenheit, Thoothukudi at 104 degrees Fahrenheit and Tirunelveli at 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Coimbatore recorded the lowest of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Met department also predicted thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds and lightning in some places including Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely to occur at some places, it added.
The IMD has also predicted strong winds along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast reaching speeds of 35-45 kmph. The department has warned fishermen not to venture into sea.
