Gang held for extortion at care centres in Hyderabad

The gang was formed by one B. Kumar Babu, who was earlier arrested for impersonating as a cop and was involved in extortion cases.

Hyderabad: Rachakonda police on Monday nabbed a seven- member gang including two women, who impersonated as Task force sleuths and raided the homes for physically challenged and extorted money and snatched valuables from their possession.

The gang was formed by one B. Kumar Babu, who was earlier arrested for impersonating as a cop and was involved in extortion cases. Two non-bailable warrants are pending against him, said police. Rs 91,000, four mobile phones purchased with stolen cash and other material were recovered from their possession.

Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said Kumar Babu was earlier arrested by the city police in eight. He had cheated public in the pretext of providing government sponsored double bed- room flats and collected money from them.

While lodged at prison after his previous arrests, he made friends with other suspects and met them after being released from the prison. He made a plan to raid care centers for physically challenged and shared his plan to his friends.
In the month of April, they barged into at least four centers and extorted money from the organisers after beating the staff. Based on complaints, cases were registered and an investigation was conducted.
