Cops rubbish rumours of north Indian kidnappers camping in TN

Two north Indian men were assaulted by residents of Chinnaianpuram in Kancheepuram on April 28.

Chennai: The Kancheepuram and Vellore police have issued warnings to residents to not beat north Indians, suspecting them as child traffickers and rubbished the rumours of north Indian kidnappers camping in the state.

Harjit Kurjir (27) and Ram Gopal (25) of Madhya Pradesh were walking on Thayaar Amman Kulam Street in Kancheepuram on Sunday at around 9 pm.

“A few children playing on the street shouted and called them child traffickers that alerted the residents. The locals caught the men and started beating them,” the police said. Ram Gopal managed to escape, while Harjit was trapped.

On information, Kancheepuram Taluk Police rushed to the spot and secured Harjit and sent him to Chengalpattu government hospital.

In another incident in Kancheepuram, R. Deepak (20) and Devarajan (22) of Kancheepuram was beaten up by the residents on Aladi Thoppu Street in Kancheepuram at 10.30 pm.

“Thinking the duo as north Indians, the residents had bashed them,” the police said.

While Devarajan fled the hold, Deepak was brutally beaten up. He was rescued by the police. A north Indian woman was also beaten up near Ponneri on Sunday.

According to police, the spate of incidents is followed by social media rumours warning parents of alleged 200 north Indians camped in the state to kidnap the children of northern districts.

Meanwhile, Kancheepuram police have issued pamphlets imploring the residents to restrain from attacking north Indians and directed them to hand over suspects to the police. The police also debunked the rumours. Vellore police have also issued similar directions to the public.
