Pakistan man's Indian wife in custody'

India authorities are saying the woman “sought helpâ€from the mission which is providing necessary consular assistance.

Islamabad: An Indian woman who married a Pakistani man has been taken in custody by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, police said Sunday.

However, India authorities are saying the woman “sought help” from the mission which is providing necessary consular assistance.

Dr Uzma had come to Pakistan on May 1 via Wagah border and married Bonir resident Tahir Ali on May 3. The couple wanted to go to New Delhi for which Uzma’s brother referred her to Indian High Commission’s employee Adnan.

According to Tahir, on May 5 they visited the High Commission building and submitted visa forms as well as their phones to the officials. Uzma then went inside on being called by the officials while he stayed back, her husband said. She did not return after that.

After a long wait, Tahir Ali inquired at the high commission’s office but they said no such woman had come to their office.

Mr Ali filed a plea at a police station. When police contacted the Indian High Commission, they confirmed the woman’s presence at their office but refused to return her back saying the negotiations on the matter will be held through the foreign office, an official said.
