The tribunal order was passed on Mr Gandhi’s petition.

Vijayawada: The Capital Region Farmers and Agricultural Labourers Rights Protection Committee has alleged violation of norms by the AP government while digging sand from the banks of the Krishna.

Committee leader Anumolu Gandhi said government had violated its own GO that “the sand cannot be used for filling or any purpose other than building construction.” It was using the sand for filling area to facilitate the construction of roads in the capital Amaravati.

He said that the National Green Tribunal had ordered the AP government to deposit an interim amount of Rs 100 crore with the Central Pollution Control Board within one month. The tribunal order was passed on Mr Gandhi’s petition.

He stated that in 2012 when minor tremors were felt on either side of the banks of Krishna River, the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, gave order suspending quarrying of sand using machines in the Krishna but the practice was still going on.
