Hyderabad: Teen missing from city ends life in Godavari

She and a friend had left home after scolding from parents.

Hyderabad: A 15-year-old girl who went missing from the city committed suicide by jumping in the Godavari river at Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday.

Another girl, who also attempted suicide with her, was rescued and handed over to her parents.

Police suspects that the duo was upset after their parents scolded them for talking to each other on the phone for long hours. They were also probably worried because they had not performed well in their examinations.

The body of the deceased, Jhansi Maria (15) of Neredmet, was brought to the city on Sunday.

Maria, a resident of RK Puram in Neredmet, and Manisha (name changed), 14, a resident of Kark-hana, were both studying at a private school. Jhansi recently finished writing her Class X examinations on April 3, while Manisha, who is a Class IX student, is yet to appear for two papers.

The two became close friends about four months ago after they performed together in a skit at a school event and started spending long hours talking to each other on the phone.

However, as their examinations had started, their parents scolded them and asked them to focus on studying instead of spending that much time talking to each other.

On April 3, after Jhansi’s wrote her last examination, the two girls planned to meet on April 5 without informing their parents.

At 11.30 am, Manisha left home under the pretext of studying at a friend's place while Jhansi told her parents that she was visiting a friend. They did not return home until late that night and their parents lodged a complaint with the Karkhana police early on Saturday.

Karkhana inspector P. Madhukar Swamy said, “At about 11 am, Jhansi and Manisha jumped from a bridge in Rajahmundry into the Godavari river. A fisherman who was present there managed to rescue Manisha. However, Jhansi drowned and her body was recovered on Saturday night.”

He said Manisha was carrying a mobile phone and Rs 90 with her. The girls travelled to Secunderabad and then to Yapral to commit suicide but failed. Finally, they went to the Secunderabad railway station and boarded the Garib Rath Express to Visakhapatnam and got down at Rajahmundry on Saturday morning.

“The girls ate breakfast together and then walked to the road-cum-railway bridge and jumped from the bridge at about 11 am,” police said. Police has registered a case of suspicious death and is investigating. Jhansi’s body was handed over to her parents after completing the formalities.
