USCIS reaches 65,000 H-1B visa limit

A total 85,000 visa applications were issued of which 20,000 were for students planning to pursue masters.

Hyderabad: Putting at rest speculations regarding the new regulations or stringent proposal to hit H1B visa process, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) saw visa applications reach 65,000 for 2019 in just five days after start of applications. A total 85,000 visa applications were issued of which 20,000 were for students planning to pursue masters. In last three years more than 2,00,000 Indians had gone to the US on H1B visas.

“USCIS has reached the congressionally-mandated 65,000 H-1B visa cap for fiscal year 2019. USCIS has also received a sufficient number of H-1B petitions to meet the 20,000 visa US advanced degree exemption, known as the master’s cap,” said a USCIS statement. Meanwhile, USCIS would continue to accept and process petitions that were otherwise exempt from the cap. However, it would reject and return filing fees for all unselected cap-subject petitions that were not prohibited multiple filings.

It would continue to accept and process petitions filed to extend the amount of time a current H-1B worker might remain in the US; change the terms of employment for current H-1B workers; allow current H-1B workers to change employers and allow current H-1B workers to work concurrently in a second H-1B position.
