Pollution kills fish at Gurappa lake

Local people in the area alerted the officials when dead fishes were seen floating on the surface of the lake on Saturday morning.

HYDERABAD: A large quantity of fish was found dead at Gurappa lake in Nalgonda. While the residents in the area alleged that the fish died due to poison intake, Pollution Control Board (PCB) officials, who collected samples from the lake, have stated that the chemical level in the water is still being investigated on but it could be the temperature variation that was caused due to change in weather conditions for the past one week. However, officials have also stated that they will investigate in the chemical units close by.

“Now that we have discovered underground pipelines being dug by chemical units that are letting their effluents into the water, we will conduct an inquiry around the surroundings of the lake to see if any untreated water was let into the lake. The residents around the area have complained of a stench emanating from the lake but we are yet to finalise if it is drainage water that is being let out from houses or chemicals causing the same," a regional PCB officer said. Local people in the area alerted the officials when dead fishes were seen floating on the surface of the lake on Saturday morning. The fish was found to be of Ravvu variety.
