Hyderabad: Dispute over skyway jams SRDP work

The civic body has been working on widening the stretch from the existing 80 ft width to 120 ft.

Hyderabad: The Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) skyway project at Jubilee Hills Road Number 45 came to a grinding halt due to lack of coordination between the town planning and engineering officials. While the town planning officials claim that a skyway is not necessary in the area, but rather just road-widening would be sufficient, the engineering officials are of the opinion that the project would require no land acquisition and would ease heavy traffic during peak hours.

According to highly placed sources, the corporation has appointed a private consultant agency and they have submitted a report stating that the skyway project would require as many as 120 properties, with 80 o them being more severely impacted. Sources said the town planning wing officials have strongly objected to the skyway construction and insist that only toad-widening would be required as traffic on this stretch is not very bad presently. The engineering officials maintain that the SRDP is not meant just for present-day needs, but for the future as well.

According to the GHMC officials, under phase III of SRDP, the civic body will construct a four-lane elevated corridor from Jubilee Hills Road Number 45 to Durgam Cheruvu at the cost of Rs 150 crores, various multi-level flyovers/ grade separators at the Botanical Gardens, Kothaguda and Kondapur junction with an estimated cost of Rs 199.36 crores and six-lane, two-way flyover crossing Seven Tombs junction and Whisper Valley junction at the cost of Rs 275.55 crores. The civic body has been working on widening the stretch from the existing 80 ft width to 120 ft.
