Truckers' talks with IRDA, Arun Jaitley fail

Sources said that the truckers are expected to stop petrol and diesel supplies to build pressure on the government.

Bengaluru: Representatives of truck owners’ association and IRDA officials held a meeting on Friday, their seventh in the last eight days since truckers have gone on strike to pressure the government to meet their demands. But even on Friday, the two sides failed to arrive at a consensus on the vehicle premium amount, which is the most contentious issue for the truckers.

Agitating association members held two separate meetings with Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi and IRDA officers in Hyderabad. In the first meeting, the central government assured association members that their demands would be considered, but the late evening meeting between association representatives and IRDA officials in Hyderabad failed to break the deadlock.Mr G.R. Shanmugappa, general secretary, South India Motor Transport Association (SIMTA), said that they will further intensify the strike from Monday. “We will stop even the supply of essential commodities,” he threatened. Sources said that the truckers are expected to stop petrol and diesel supplies to build pressure on the government.
