Income tax department raids Mayawati's brother again

The department conducted searches at various offices in Delhi and around it allegedly linked to Kumar.

New Delhi: Income tax (IT) department on Friday conducted searches at office premises linked to BSP chief Mayawati’s brother Anand Kumar as government goes after tax evaders after tax amnesty scheme Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna (PMGKY) closed last week.

This was part of overall income tax department raids across India against shell company operations on charges of alleged black money generation worth over Rs 100 crore.

The department conducted searches at various offices in Delhi and around it allegedly linked to Kumar. As part of the operations, sources said surveys were also conducted on few builders and businesses which had close business relations with the companies of Kumar. IT suspects benami investments in these entities allegedly on behalf of Kumar. IT department is investigating whether these transactions are genuine. The premises of a Hyderabad based chit fund company was also surveyed. The company is said to have made cash deposits worth over Rs 80 crore after demonetisation.

As part of the IT department operation, a Mumbai based jeweller business premises were searched. The said jeweller had allegedly deposited Rs 6 crore cash after demonetisation. An agri-commodity trader offices in Delhi were too searched by IT department The group if biggest importer of pulses in the country and has allegedly evaded tax through benami trading on NCDEX/MCX and online commodity trading.
