At 1 am, Chennai woman demands special flight to Delhi

The woman could be suffering from bipolar disorder.

Chennai: A woman in her early 60's came to the Chennai airport in her nightdress and created a flutter on Wednesday night asking security men to allow her inside "immediately because a special flight was waiting". The woman, who was later identified as a doctor by profession, had reached the airport at around 1 am in a self-driven car from her residence in Ashok Nagar. Her argument with the security personnel went on for more than an hour until her son, also a doctor, reached the airport and pacified her and took her back home.

Enquiries with the son revealed that his mother was working in Delhi in the health department in a senior position and since retiring a few months ago she had settled down in Ashok Nagar. "But sometimes she is having some illusions and she behaves as if she is still in that position and claims that there was an emergency meeting in Delhi which she had to attend," the young doctor told security men.

The son had called on her mobile while she was having her arguments with the guards at the entrance, which is when she told him that she was in airport and also informed him that the guards were not allowing her inside. This helped the son to trace his mother and he came in another car with a driver. He then drove his mother back home while the driver drove the other car back, airport sources said.

Senior psychiatrist Dr S Nambi noted that the woman could be suffering from bipolar disorder. "Probably she is having bipolar disorder. Such patients can go to extreme highs as well as into depression. Proper medication can keep them normal. Otherwise they can behave as if they control everything. They think they are very important," Dr Nambi said.
