Karimnagar: Three teenagers drown in Manair while celebrating Holi

The incident took place near the cable-stayed bridge, when the children entered a deep part of the river

Warangal: When the people were celebrating the Holi festival with gaiety and enthusiasm, a tragic incident took place with the families of migrant labourers.

Three children of guest workers drowned in the Manair near the Housing Board Colony in Karimnagar on Tuesday when they went to bathe in the river after playing Holi.

According to the police, the victims were identified as Veeranjaneyulu, 16, Santosh, 13, and Anil, 14 natives of Ongole district of Andhra Pradesh. Their parents had come to Karimnagar for work.

Police said the incident occurred near the cable-stayed bridge, when they entered a deep part of the river. People nearby also did not notice the children drowning, police said.

Upon receiving information from the locals, the police rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies to the hospital for the post-mortem. They registered the case and started an investigation.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao expressed deep condolences to the family members of the bereaved, and announced Rs 3 lakh ex gratia on behalf of the state government.

Minister Gangula Kamalakar who expressed shock at the incident announced Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased.
