TIRUPATI: Surveys and statistics drawn by various organisations reveal that cancer affects women more in India though more men die of the disease.
The National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research (NICPR) survey reveals that one woman dies of cervical cancer every eight minutes. One of every two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer succumbs to the disease in the country.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer afflicting women and accounts for 14 per cent of all cancers in women. Globocan 2018 data show that 1,62,468 new cases were registered and 87,090 deaths were occurred last year. The incidence rates begin to rise in the early thirties and peak at ages 50-64 years. One in 28 women is likely to develop breast cancer during her lifetime. One in 22 women in urban areas and one in 60 in rural areas is likely to develop breast cancer.
Cervical cancer follows, with 96,922 new cases registered every year. Globocan data showed 60,078 women died of the cancer last year.
The survey also showed that rural women were at a higher risk of developing cervical cancer.
