Man hacked to death by armed gang in Pondicherry

A 55-year-old man was hacked to death by an armed gang on Ginjee Salai near Government hospital here on Wednesday.

Puducherry: A 55-year-old man was hacked to death by an armed gang on Ginjee Salai near Government hospital here on Wednesday. Police said the victim was Maran, an owner-cum-driver of an ambulance, of Vaithikuppam in Puducherry.

Maran, an active worker of Congress party, returned to Puducherry from Chennai around 10 pm on Tuesday. He was sitting at a tea shop when a five-member gang attacked him with sickles and other weapons resulting in his instantant death. The accused later fled the scene.

On information, police rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem to the Puducherry Government medical college hospital. Grand Bazaar police have registered a case and also started probe.

The relatives of the deceased, who belongs to the fisher men community, along with people of the area thronged to Raj Nivas to meet the Lt Governor Kiran Bedi saying that they won’t receive the body until culprits are arrested.

Lt Governor met the protesting people and ensured them of strong action against the culprits. The protesters also sought the intervention of the Lt Governor to prevent any such incident in future.

Ms Bedi discussed the matter with chief secretary Ashwani Kumar and asked him to seek assistance of State Human Rights Committe chaired by Justice JAK Sampathkumar to examine existing police arrangements for the safety of fishermen community and suggest a permanent solution to prevent any untoward incident in future in the fishermen village.

"Follow up action can be taken based on the report of the said committee", an official communication from the Raj Nivas said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajiv Ranjan also met the relatives of Maran , consoled them and assured the immediate arrest of the culprits.
