Outfits petition DGP, IG-Coast Guard to book SL Navy for murder
Chennai: The call for prosecuting the Sri Lankan navy officials for murdering an Indian fisherman and critically injuring another gets louder with two outfits petitioning the Director General of Police (DGP) and IG-Coast Guard.
Security was stepped up in various installations including banks, societies and the sri Lankan consulate as a precautionary measure.
Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) founder Panruti T. Velmurugan presented a petition to the DGP demanding a directive to the Ramanathapuram district police to book a murder case against the Sri Lankan navy personnel besides confiscating the vehicles used by the Lankan Navy. Velmurugan and his supporters courted arrest for their attempt to lay siege to the Sri Lankan diplomatic mission here condemning the killing.
The protesters before being removed also submitted a memorandum pressing a charter of demands including the immediate release of fishermen languishing in Lankan jails. Fisherfolk of Nochikuppam fishing hamlet came together and staged a stir in the evening condemning the brutal attack on Indian fishermen.
The federation of fisherfolk, Bharathiya Meenavar Kootavai, petitioned the IG-Coast Guard to arrest the Navy personnel and his commander in connection with the firing.
