Kerala government removes Malappuram CWC chairman
Malappuram: The state government has removed Sherif Ullath as the chief of the Child Welfare Committee, Malappuram, over an alleged illegal adoption in 2015.
The order issued on Tuesday says charges framed against him by the police were of serious nature and found the abuse of his power to facilitate the adoption of the newborn, flouting rules.
The Malappuram police had registered a case against Mr Ullath in December last year on a complaint of the director of the social justice department on charges under IPC Sections 370 (child trafficking) and 80 (illegal adoption) and the Juvenile Justice Act.
The director of the Social Justice Department has recommended the government to initiate action against Mr Ullath as per the section 27(7)(i) of the JJ Act 2005.
The boy was born in a hospital in Kozhikode on September 11, 2015, and later surrendered to a foundling home in Kodur near Malappuram by the biological mother.
The child was then handed over to a childless couple. But the District Child Protection Unit contended the adoption claiming that as per the records the child was taken back by biological father and the norms had been flouted in the adoption procedure.
