The fire broke out at 11.30 am while the tins containing turpentine was being loaded on to trucks.

Palakkad: A woman staffer has suffered severe burns when fire broke out in a turpentine manufacturing company at Kanjikode industrial area where nearly 40,000 litres of the product were stored. A truck loading the turpentine was also completely burned during the fire.

It took nearly two-and-a-half hours for the five fire engines from Palakkad and Kanjikode fire stations to douse the fire. The company producing turpentine used to mix with paint is owned by Lazer, a native of Thrissur.

The fire broke out at 11.30 am while the tins containing turpentine was being loaded on to trucks. The drivers of the trucks brought out Aruna, 40, of Elappully here who got trapped inside the unit during the fire. She is at present undergoing treatment at Thrissur Medical College Hospital. Two inter-state works also suffered minor burns.

Fire Force officers said that the company had not put in place proper fire safety measures and that led to the spreading of the fire and the exact reason for the accident was yet to be ascertained.
