Khammam: Dummugudem project to be renamed as Srirama irrigation project

Telangana cabinet on Sunday approved redesigning of Dummugudem lift irrigation project in Khammam with Rs 7,900 crore

Hyderabad: The TS Cabinet on Sunday approved redesigning of Dummugudem lift irrigation project in Khammam with Rs 7,900 crore and renamed it as “Srirama irrigation project” in the name of Lord Rama in Bhadrachalam of Khammam district.

The government decided to rename the project to avoid political controversy since some parties were demanding that it be given the name of former PMs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Congress MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy recently wrote to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao urging him to rechristen the project as Indira-Rajiv Sagar project as they had served the country and sacrificed their lives for the unity and integrity of the nation.

Briefing the media on the decision, ministers T. Harish Rao and T. Nageshwar Rao said the redesign would pave way for irrigation of five lakh acres in Khammam.

Mr Nageswara Rao said there was no need for the TS government to take any approvals from any agency for redesigning the project since the state will utilise its legitimate share of 50 TMC of Godavari water for the project.
