Hyderabad: Many hurdles lined up

If 10 per cent reservation is added for upper caste poor, then the total will be 59 per cent.

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court of India has capped caste based reservation at 50 per cent. The government has given 27 per cent reservation for backward classes, 16 per cent reservation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes making it a total of 49 per cent reservation.

If 10 per cent reservation is added for upper caste poor, then the total will be 59 per cent.

Professor K. Nageshwar, MLC says, “The implementation process is a hurdle as it is not possible to identify ‘upper caste poor’ based on the yardstick the government has placed. It will open a Pandora’s box as Marathas, Baniyas, Jaats and Gurjars will also line up for reservation.”

The Muslims are already upset as the resolution passed by the TS government for 12 per cent reservation for minorities was not approved by the Centre. Abid Rasool Khan, chairman, State Minorities commission of AP and TS said, “It is completely double standards on the part of the Modi government. Reservation for upper castes — those who are economically poor — is nothing but vote bank politics.”
