Government to re-nominate Elvis Stephenson to Assembly

The Telangana state Cabinet on Monday decided to re-nominate Elvis Stephenson as nominated member of the state Assembly.

Hyderabad: It may be recalled that Mr Stephenson, when he was a nominated MLA in the previous House, was involved in the ‘cash for vote’ case in which the then Telugu Desam MLA Revanth Reddy was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau allegedly paying a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to Mr Stephenson for supporting a TD candidate in the Council elections.

The Telangana state Cabinet on Monday decided to re-nominate Elvis Stephenson as nominated member of the state Assembly. The cabinet’s decision was forwarded by the government to Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan and a Gazette notification will be issued upon getting his consent.

The state Cabinet comprising Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and home minister Mahmood Ali met on Monday for the first time since the Assembly elections, to nominate the Anglo-Indian community representative to enable him to take oath along with other elected MLAs. This has never happened in the history of the Assembly. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), in a press release on Monday, said that normally there is a delay in nominating the Anglo-Indian representative which results in his not taking oath along with other elected members. To avoid this, the Telangana Cabinet has, in its very first meeting, decided on the nomination of the Anglo-Indian community representative.

The Telangana government is taking decisions about continuing the “Ganga Jamuna tehzeeb”, officials said. Mr Mumtaz Ahmed Khan was also nominated as pro-tem speaker on Monday.
