Kottayam: A gender sensitisation programme for the boy students of five selected schools in the district will be conducted by the Gandhian studies centre of Alphonsa College, Pala, in collaboration with ‘Action Break Silence,’ a London-based NGO.
The programme, meant for the students from 5th to 7th standards, will be later expanded to other schools in the state.
“It aims to break down stereotypes and help participants better understand the importance of gender equality and build empathetic behaviour and attitudes, particularly towards women and girls. The boys are also equally vulnerable sections who become victims of abuse,” Dr Teresa Joseph, director of the studies’ centre, told DC.
The boys will get a forum to talk about sexual violence against boys and girls and in the long term it will help prevent abusive or violent behaviour towards women and girls.
The students comprising 35 in a class will be given training under the supervision of a psychologist from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
Dr. Cyriac Thomas, former vice-chancellor of MG University, Kottayam, will inaugurate the programme at St.Thomas Higher Secondary School, Pala.
‘Action Breaks Silence’ is the brainchild of its South African-born founder president, Debi Steven.
