Services of Home Guards Lauded

Kurnool: The contributions of home guards in maintaining law and order were lauded in connection with Home Guards Day at the district police office on Wednesday. District SP G. Krishnakanth praised the home guards for their outstanding work, highlighting their crucial role in upholding law and order on par with that of regular police personnel.

He particularly commended their performance during the Devaragattu Banni Utsavam, various festivals, and the Adoni and Kurnool Vinayaka Chaviti occasions. He also expressed his hope for their excellent performance in the upcoming elections. The SP distributed prizes to the children of the home guards who achieved good marks and to those who excelled in sports competitions.

Home guards commandant for the southern region Mahesh Kumar spoke on the significance of the home guard system, which has been integral to the police department since its inception in 1963. He said that home guards also contribute to other departments.

Further, the Nandyal police observed Home Guards Day, and district SP K. Raghuveer Reddy said that despite having fewer facilities compared to regular police personnel, home guards often deliver services exceeding their expectations. He pointed out their involvement in various roles, including law and order maintenance, driving, computer operations, and providing security in central and state government institutions, temples, and other technical areas, especially in the scenario of staff shortages in police stations.

The SP also mentioned the financial support provided to home guards, including a personal loan facility of up to Rs. 3 lakh from Axis Bank. He also mentioned the financial aid available under the Accident Central Welfare Fund, including Rs. 20,000 for accidents, an ex-gratia payment of Rs. 5 lakh in the event of accidental death, and accident insurance of Rs. 10 lakh if the accidental death occurs in the line of duty.
