In the last six months they have operated successfully on 86 children out of 102 infants.

Tiruchy: The pediatrics wing of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (Mgmgh) Tiruchy has operated upon two children with congenital abnormalities in the past six months, according to the hospital dean Dr K. Vanitha.

She told newsmen at Tiruchy on Friday that they were using laparoscopy to operate on children and it has given good results.

In the last six months they have operated successfully on 86 children out of 102 infants. All the surgeries were performed free of cost under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, she added.

Dr Prabhakaran, HOD, Pediatric Surgery, Mgmgh, said the successful operations have been performed on children with congenital lobar emphysema, anorectal malformation, cleft lips. About 90 per cent of the patients were referred from other hospitals, he said. “We were able to perform the surgeries successfully on most of the children,” he claimed and added that surgeries were performed on newborn infants from 0-45 days.

Ms. Veni of Manapaprai said her six-month-old male infant was having a birth defect namely, anorectal malformation (did not have a hole in his anus) because of which he could not pass motions. She and her family members approached the doctors of Mgmgh and they performed a surgery after which her infant is fine, she added.
