Vijayawada: The 56th Home Guards Formation Day was celebrated on a grand note at the Vijayawada Police Parade Grounds on Thursday.
City police commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao received the guard of honour by the home guards led by N. Sai Kumar.
Praising the services of the home guards, Mr Tirumala Rao said they are a boon in controlling of law and order.
He said that as many as 1,050 home guards provide security to VIPs, maintain law and order, control traffic, fight crime, serve as drivers and computer operators and also serve the people in times of like meetings and festivals.
Mr Tirumala Rao later handed over the prizes to the winners of various competitions conducted to mark the Home Guards Formation Day.
