Telangana: Elevator body seeks grading system on safety

Old lifts should be changed after a period of time as they can become unsafe.

Hyderabad: With more than eight lakh lifts or elevators installed in the state, and about two lakh workers involved in the elevator industry in Telangana, greater safety for users is essential to ensure that there are a fewer accidents. Members of the Telangana Elevator Association say that there should be more inspections of elevators in the buildings and a grading system should be started on the safety aspect, depending on the condition and usage of the lift.

Old lifts should be changed after a period of time as they can become unsafe. Avinash Challa, president of the association, says, “We are trying to educate residents of buildings and also lift technicians on how to avoid accidents. We have also started a new scheme providing Rs 5 lakh insurance for technicians, helpers or contractors in case of any emergency.”

He said most accidents involving elevators happen due to callousness and negligence. “Children should be kept away from grilles on elevators, even automatic elevators. We want each building to register their elevator with us so that we can provide insurance to users of the lift in case of an accident.”

The Telangana Elevator Association has collaborated with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to ensure better safety of lifts. The association consists of lift manufacturers, technicians, manufacturers and others.
