Solatium to kin of building collapse victims in Pondicherry

The Chief Minister also announced that government jobs would be provided to the daughter of Sivabharathi and son of Iyyanaar.

Puducherry: Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Wednesday paid condolences to two persons, who were killed when portions of an old school building block of Government Higher Secondary school collapsed and fell over them on Tuesday.

He announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each be given to their families from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He also announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of two who were injured. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when staff of the school was demolishing some parts of the building block of Government Higher Secondary school at Thondamanatham village here.

School supervisor Sivabharathi and staffer Iyyanar died after portions of the building fell over them. Two other staff members, Raman and Madhivanan, suffered serious injuries.

The Chief Minister also announced that government jobs would be provided to the daughter of Sivabharathi and son of Iyyanaar. The education department is in the process of demolishing the dilapidated school building. It had identified 58 buildings of such nature in all the four regions of the Union Territory. Of this, 28 were already demolished and steps are being taken to construct new buildings, he added.
